In the Brain
“In the Brain” is a VR game I designed and constructed in Unity. . The aim of the game is to explore and represent the Posthuman view of the relationship between the mind and the body by means of video game-like control. As the game title suggests, the game happens in the brain. The game starts in dark hallway which symbolizes a dream state. As the player moves toward the light, she enters a room which represents waking up inside her brain. In the geometry decoration room, she finds two speakers and a screen which represent ears and eyes. When the player starts to play around with the yellow ball on the ground, she will soon realize that as the ball touches the array sign on the ground, the view of the “eye” is updated. Due to the design of the room, the player will soon see a mirror through the “eye” and thus learn her body, which is just a white capsule. Then player can move around in a home- like environment where their white body exists through moving the yellow ball inside the brain room. In the body world, the player may encounter different objects; for example, a computer which contains my short film “Silicon Me” about the digitized self in the modern world, and a window with a view of a garden. Both the computer and window project the player’s view out of the brain room and into the physical world directly. The aim of this is to imply that certain parts of life may feel more real than others.
By making this game, I learned technically about how to make a VR game with Unity and experienced first-hand the power of this technology. And theoretically, I practiced visualizing and discussing a profound media theory, posthumanism, through digital art.
